I LOVE finding ways to encourage a love for reading. Thankfully, all five of our older kids have taken to books and still enjoy reading to this day. As a matter of fact, the only “punishment” that has worked well over the years is to ban reading for a day when the kids aren’t getting their chores or schoolwork done! (I know—that’s a pretty great “problem” to have. LOL.)
But I really do give some credit for their love of reading to all the different tools we’ve used over the years. We’ve always made books readily available, read together, encouraged independent reading, and kept screen time limited; especially when they were young.
And now we have our caboose. Ruby is four and absolutely adores being read to. She is constantly bringing books to me, her dad, or one of her older siblings and asking us to read to her. I LOVE THAT! I have a strong suspicion she’ll become an avid reader too. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop introducing her to new ways to engage with books. Enter: Tappi!
What Is Tappi?
Tappi is a mom-founded, screen-free interactive reading system. It’s designed for young children, ages 2-6. Instead of handing kids a tablet or putting on a show, Tappi combines real, physical books with an interactive audio pen. Kids simply use the Tappi Play Pen to tap different places throughout the books. Depending on where they tap, they can hear stories, songs, animal sounds, music, games, and other educational content. It’s user friendly and super cool!
I especially appreciate how Tappi isn’t designed to replace parents reading with their children. Instead, it’s another way for kids to interact with books, including independently when Mom or Dad can’t sit down and read at that exact moment. The Tappi Starter Set also received a 2026 Good Housekeeping Parenting Award, which is a pretty special recognition for a relatively new product.
Tappi Starter Set: 3 Interactive Books + Audio Pen
The Tappi Starter Set comes packaged in a giftable box and has everything you need to get started. This includes: the Tappi Play Pen, three hardcover board books, and a USB-C charging cable. The three included books are Animals, Let’s Play Music, and The Wheels on the Bus & Other Songs. Each 8″ x 8″ book features more than 100 interactive audio points, so there is a LOT for kids to discover beyond simply listening to the words on the page.
- Animals: This book is perfect for animal-loving kids. Children get to explore more than 80 animals while hearing their names, realistic animal sounds, and interesting facts. It’s a fun way to build vocabulary while introducing little ones to creatures from around the world. And because kids control what they want to explore by tapping the page, they can revisit their favorites as many times as they’d like.
- Let’s Play Music: The Let’s Play Music book introduces kids to seven different musical instruments and lets them tap, listen, sing, and explore. I really like how Tappi encourages kids to interact with what they’re hearing, discover different sounds and rhythms, and get their bodies moving with this one.
- The Wheels on the Bus & Other Songs: This one is probably my favorite because what preschooler doesn’t love a good sing-along?! The Wheels on the Bus & Other Songs includes six familiar nursery rhymes that children can tap and sing along with. It’s a great choice for encouraging participation, language development, and movement.
One Tappi Pen Works With The Entire Collection
One feature parents will appreciate is that you don’t have to buy a new pen every time you purchase another book. The rechargeable Tappi Play Pen works across Tappi’s entire book collection. So once you own the Starter Set, you can expand your child’s library by adding more books. (Although you CAN purchase an additional Tappi Pen if you have multiple kids who all want to ‘read’ their own books at the same time. The pen charges via USB-C, offers up to six hours of battery life, and has Wi-Fi connectivity for book updates.
Screen-Free Learning That Kids Can Do Independently
One of the biggest selling points of Tappi to me is the screen-free, yet interactive, learning. We all know there are plenty of apps that can read stories, play songs, or teach preschool skills. But they still require handing your child a screen, which I try to avoid. With Tappi, kids are holding an actual book, turning physical pages, looking at illustrations, and deciding where they want to tap and explore.

Tappi books incorporate activities that can help support vocabulary, language development, early literacy, early math concepts, and fine-motor skills. And because the system is easy for young children to operate, they can enjoy it independently. Because, while I do love reading stories to Ruby, there are times I just can’t drop everything to do it. And in those moments, Tappi helps fill the gap.
